If You Had to Defend Yourself Tomorrow… Would You Be Ready?

An Open Letter from Mason McClellan, Founder of Stoic Martial Arts

Dear Future Student,

Let me ask you a question.

If something happened tomorrow—if you had to protect yourself, your spouse, or your child—would you know what to do?

Not what you think you would do.

Not what you’ve seen in a movie.

What could you actually do?

Most people don’t know the answer to that question.

And that’s okay.

But here’s something I’ve learned after more than 30 years of training, fighting, coaching, and teaching martial arts:

The worst time to discover what you’re capable of is when you have no choice.

That’s why I started Stoic Martial Arts.

And it’s why I’m writing this letter to you today.

Most People Wait Until Something Happens

They wait until they feel out of shape.

They wait until their child gets bullied.

They wait until they have a frightening encounter.

They wait until they’re older, weaker, less mobile, or less confident than they used to be.

Then they decide it’s time to do something.

But martial arts isn’t something you learn overnight.

Confidence isn’t something you can purchase.

And the ability to protect yourself isn’t something you develop by watching videos on the internet.

It’s built through repetition.

Through showing up.

Through learning something difficult and discovering that you’re capable of more than you thought.

The question isn’t whether you need martial arts today.

The question is:

Who would you become if you started training today and kept going for the next year?

Think about that for a moment.

Imagine being stronger, healthier, more confident, and more capable than you are right now.

Imagine walking into a difficult situation without feeling helpless.

Imagine your child learning how to handle adversity, develop discipline, and build confidence that carries into the classroom, friendships, and everyday life.

That’s what martial arts can offer.

But you have to take the first step.

Why I Built Stoic Martial Arts

My name is Mason McClellan.

I’ve been involved in martial arts since 1994.

Over the past three decades, I’ve trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, and mixed martial arts.

I’m a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a coach, a father, and someone who still believes there is something incredibly valuable about stepping onto the mats and challenging yourself.

I’ve watched martial arts change people’s lives.

I’ve seen people walk into a gym nervous, overweight, intimidated, and unsure of themselves.

I’ve watched those same people become strong, confident, skilled, and capable.

I’ve seen children who struggled with confidence discover that they could do something difficult.

I’ve watched adults who thought their athletic years were behind them discover a completely new passion.

And I’ve seen the friendships that develop when people consistently challenge each other to become better.

That’s why I opened Stoic Martial Arts in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

I wanted to build something different.

Not just a fitness club.

Not just a place where people show up, sweat, and go home.

I wanted to create an academy where ordinary people could learn extraordinary skills.

Where kids develop confidence and discipline.

Where adults rediscover their athleticism.

Where beginners are welcomed, experienced students are challenged, and everyone has an opportunity to improve.

Our philosophy is simple:

We build training partners, not casuals.

That doesn’t mean you have to become a professional fighter.

It doesn’t mean you have to compete.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to be in great shape before you start.

It means that when you walk through our doors, we take your development seriously.

We want to help you become someone who trains with purpose, treats others with respect, and continues improving.

Whether you’re eight years old or fifty-eight, the goal is the same.

Progress, not perfection.

You Don’t Have to Be in Shape to Start

This is probably the most common concern I hear.

“I’m interested, but I need to get in better shape first.”

No, you don’t.

That’s like saying you need to learn how to swim before taking swimming lessons.

You come to martial arts to develop your fitness.

You come to learn.

You come to improve.

You don’t need prior experience, incredible flexibility, or the ability to do fifty push-ups.

You need a willingness to show up and give yourself an opportunity to learn.

We understand that starting something new can be intimidating.

You might be worried about keeping up.

You might be concerned about getting hurt.

You might wonder whether you’re too old, too out of shape, or simply not the kind of person who belongs in a martial arts gym.

Let me reassure you.

We’ve built Stoic for people just like you.

Our job as coaches is to meet you where you are and help you move forward.

You don’t have to prove anything on your first day.

You just have to begin.

What Can You Learn at Stoic?

We offer several programs because different people come to martial arts for different reasons.

Some want to learn self-defense.

Some want to get in shape.

Some want to compete.

Some simply want an activity that challenges them mentally and physically.

And some parents want their children to develop confidence, coordination, discipline, and resilience.

Whatever brought you here, we want to help you find the right starting point.

Teen/Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu | Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

BJJ teaches you how to control an opponent using leverage, technique, positioning, and submissions.

It is particularly valuable for learning how to handle physical confrontations that end up on the ground.

You’ll develop strength, coordination, problem-solving skills, and confidence through training with partners.

Blue Fade BJJ Rash Guard Short Sleeve – Blue Black No-Gi Training | Roll Gear

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu

No-Gi focuses on grappling without the traditional uniform.

You’ll learn takedowns, positional control, escapes, and submissions in a faster-paced training environment.

It’s a great option for students interested in practical grappling, athletic development, and competition.

Oh noes!

Boxing

Learn proper punching technique, footwork, defense, movement, and conditioning.

Boxing provides an excellent workout while teaching real skills that develop coordination, timing, and confidence.

Privates VS group MMA training: which is better for you?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

MMA combines striking, wrestling, and grappling into a comprehensive martial arts system.

You’ll learn how different fighting disciplines work together while improving your physical conditioning and technical ability.

Game Theory Jiu Jitsu - Unsere Kurse

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Our kids program is about much more than learning how to grapple.

We help children develop confidence, discipline, respect, coordination, and the ability to handle challenges.

Kids learn practical martial arts skills in a structured environment that encourages effort, teamwork, and personal growth.

Kids Classes

Kids Ninja

Our Ninja program introduces children to movement, balance, agility, strength, and problem-solving through fun physical challenges.

It’s an excellent way for kids to build confidence in their bodies while developing athletic skills they can carry into other sports and activities.

What Happens When You Walk Through Our Doors?

I understand that walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel uncomfortable.

You don’t know anybody.

You don’t know what to wear.

You don’t know whether you’ll be expected to spar, wrestle, or keep up with experienced students.

That’s why we want to make your introduction as comfortable and straightforward as possible.

When you contact Stoic, we’ll help you determine which program is right for you or your child.

We’ll arrange a time for you to come in, see the academy, meet our coaches, and experience what training is like.

We’ll explain how classes work, what equipment you’ll need, and how to get started.

You won’t be expected to know anything before you arrive.

And you won’t be thrown into a situation you’re not prepared for.

Our goal is to help you have a positive first experience and understand how martial arts can fit into your life.

For parents, we’ll help you find an appropriate class for your child’s age and experience.

For adults, we’ll talk about your goals, your background, and what you hope to accomplish.

You don’t have to commit to becoming a lifelong martial artist on your first visit.

You simply have to give yourself an opportunity to experience it.

Take a Look!

The Most Important Skill You Develop Isn’t a Punch or a Submission

It’s the ability to do difficult things.

Martial arts teaches you how to deal with resistance.

You’ll encounter positions you don’t understand.

You’ll learn techniques that feel awkward.

You’ll train with people who are more experienced than you.

And sometimes, you’ll struggle.

That’s part of the process.

Over time, you learn that struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re learning.

You become more comfortable being uncomfortable.

You learn to remain composed under pressure.

You learn that improvement comes from consistent effort rather than immediate success.

Those lessons don’t disappear when you leave the gym.

They follow you into your career, your relationships, your parenting, and your everyday life.

For children, those lessons can be especially powerful.

Learning how to lose gracefully, try again, respect teammates, and work toward long-term goals provides an opportunity to develop confidence that isn’t dependent on always winning.

That’s the deeper value of martial arts.

And that’s the kind of environment we’re building at Stoic.

You Don’t Have to Train Like a Professional Fighter

One of the biggest misconceptions about martial arts is that everyone who trains wants to fight professionally.

Most people don’t.

They want to be healthy.

They want to be confident.

They want to learn a useful skill.

They want to challenge themselves.

They want to have something in their lives that belongs to them.

And they want to surround themselves with people who encourage them to improve.

You can pursue those goals without ever stepping into a competition.

Of course, if you want to compete or take your training further, we’ll help you work toward that too.

But competition is not a requirement.

You get to decide what martial arts means to you.

Our responsibility is to help you develop the skills, habits, and confidence to pursue your goals.

What Will Your Life Look Like a Year From Now?

Think about where you were a year ago.

Maybe you’ve been telling yourself that you need to get back into shape.

Maybe you’ve thought about trying BJJ or boxing for years.

Maybe you’ve wanted to enroll your child in martial arts but haven’t gotten around to it.

And here you are, still thinking about it.

Now imagine two different versions of yourself one year from today.

In the first version, nothing changes.

You continue doing what you’re doing.

You remain interested in martial arts, but you never quite find the time to get started.

In the second version, you decide to take the first step today.

You walk into Stoic.

You meet your coaches.

You learn your first techniques.

You attend your first few classes.

And eventually, training becomes part of your routine.

A year from now, you could have dozens or even hundreds of hours of training experience.

You could be stronger, more confident, and more capable.

You could have developed friendships with people you never would have met otherwise.

Your child could be developing skills and confidence that will serve them for years.

There’s no guarantee that any particular result will happen overnight.

But one thing is certain.

A year from now, you’ll wish you had started today.
